Punt Road Yarra Valley

Our Yarra Valley winery was named after the famous Melbourne inner city thoroughfare that joins the northern suburbs to the south. The inspiration came from a photograph from 1856 which shows Punt Road as it meets the Yarra River. The only way across the river was via the punt, hence the road’s name. What caught our imagination was the hill in the background; while now a major part of the suburb of South Yarra, back then it was an expansive vineyard and one of the first planted in Victoria. It’s hard to believe that the busy road of today was once not much more than a dirt track and some of Melbourne’s most expensive real estate was once a vineyard.
